Design justice rethinks design processes, centers people who are normally marginalized by design, and uses collaborative, creative practices to address the deepest challenges our communities face. It’s June of 2017, and I’m standing in the security line at the Detroit Metro airport. I’m on my way back to Boston from the Allied Media Conference, a “collaborative laboratory of media-based organizing” that’s been held every year in Detroit for the past two decades.1 As a nonbinary, transgender, femme presenting person, my experience of the AMC was deeply liberating.
Our built environment must not reflect the power and history of the few, but rather represent and reinforce justice and well-being for all. Nowadays Design Justice is a niche, with offices specialized in it, but the idea is that it becomes something completely natural in our daily lives where rethinking structural design problems is something normal and not a “specialty”, even preventing the population from having to act in their own cause. In Bristol, the statue of slave trader Edward Colston was replaced by a statue of a black woman with her hand raised representing the significance of the movement and its importance in society. In 2020, the Black Lives Matter movement started with the murder of George Floyd in the USA, triggered the toppling of statues of slave settlers by people who considered that an offense in their walk in that place.
In its written statement, COSIS argues that States have an obligation under UNCLOS to take action to prevent climate change. The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea has announced they will deliver their advisory opinion on the obligations of countries to prevent climate change on May 21. The opinion, while limited in scope and non-binding, could force action by member states and provide an important preview for how the International Court of Justice may rule on its pending advisory opinion on the Obligations of States in respect of Climate Change. Civil Rights Corps challenges systemic injustice in the American legal system. They engage in advocacy and public education and specialize in innovative, systemic civil rights litigation with the goal of resensitizing the legal system and our culture to the injustice and brutality that characterize the contemporary American criminal system.
Most design processes today are therefore structured in ways that make it impossible to see, engage with, account for, or attempt to remedy the unequal distribution of benefits and burdens that they reproduce. As Crenshaw notes, feminist or antiracist theory or policy that is not grounded in intersectional understanding of gender and race cannot adequately address the experiences of Black women, or other multiply-burdened people, when it comes to the formulation of policy demands. The idea of intentionally building liberatory values into technological systems is not new.
